A CULTURE OF DESIGN AND CRAFT

legacy of concrete design and fabrication:

In 2010, Alexander Kitchin and Nicole Sherman joined to create Fine Concrete. Building on Alexander’s 17 years of design and custom casting experience, and Nicole’s design and project management background, Fine Concrete established a design-forward fabrication studio focused on complex 3-dimensional casting. Working within the built environment, they established a bold practice and built an extensive body of work that transforms conventional preconceptions of the material of concrete and the space it defines.  Always acting as advocates for the design intent, they emphasize a dedication to fine craftsmanship, innovative engineering, collaboration, community-building projects, sustainability, and innovative form.

When Lafarge/Holcim (now Amrize) introduced Ultra High Performance Concrete to the US, Fine Concrete was a natural partner to develop the architectural market for this unique and cutting-edge concrete mix design. In 2012, Alexander and Nicole launched a relationship with LaFarge North America to dedicate its production to Ductal. Alexander taught to several design and material research studios at the University of Virginia, exposing the material’s potential in the architectural realm. Today, Fine Concrete continues to be the only exclusive North American designer and fabricator of Ductal UHPC in the architectural market, developing the original patented 1998 mix design from France.

In the Fall of 2025, Michael Finnegan joined Fine Concrete as President and, in collaboration with Nicole and Alexander, will further the firm’s vision for the future to create projects that impact communities with meaningful collaborations across the design disciplines
